在为电影《Friends》（朋友）创作并出版原声专辑后，Elton John又推出了带乡村乐风格的专辑《Tumbleweed Connection》（风滚草的联系）和现场版专辑《17－10－70》，这3 张专辑加上《Elton John》全部打入排行榜前30佳的行列，这一成就以前只有 The Beatles乐队才有过。从此，Elton John成为全球最出名的流行摇滚乐手之一，他迎合时代的需要，填补了 The Beatles之后留下的空白。 1992 年，Elton John于7年前结识的一位患艾滋病的11岁少年 Ryan White病逝，使他受到极大的震撼，决心投身慈善事业。次年即设立了福利组织“ Elton John艾滋病基金会”，直接援助艾滋病患者。正因如此，他才与同样醉心慈善事业的戴安娜王妃成为莫逆之交，并在1995年获得勋爵封号。1973年的 “Candle in the Wind ”其实是Elton John和 Bernie献给影星玛丽莲·梦露的。1997年，为纪念因车祸不幸逝世的戴安娜王妃而推出的单曲唱片《Candle in the wind 97》则是经 Bernie Taupin重新填词的“Goodbye England’s Rose”（再见，英格兰玫瑰），唱片的所有收入全部捐给戴安娜慈善基金会，表达了两人对戴妃的崇敬和哀悼之情。这张单曲唱片突破了3180万张的销量，一举打破由 Bing Crosby的单曲 “White Christmas”（白色圣诞）所保持的3000万张销量的吉尼斯世界纪录。
